How to use Gemini for Productivity

Google assistant has grown over the past few years to outperform other top assistants like Siri and Alexa. You can do pretty much any task hands-free with Google Assistant.

We've seen it doing tasks like controlling lights and making you feel less bored while you're bored. But today is something different. We'll take advantage of Google Assistant to make yourself lazy and productive (So contrasting, isn't it?).

This article focusses on leveraging Google assistant or Gemini to increase the productivity of your day-to-day life.

This Article has been updated to our current trends (2025) for more relevancy. If you have any tips or doubts regarding this, the comments box is all yours.

Here are few productivity tips to effectively use Google Assistant / Gemini.

Understanding How Gemini Works

Gemini has replaced Google Assistant, and I must say, it made sure we didn't miss Google Assistant one bit. A seamless integration into our devices, with voice search giving you access to a new generative AI based assistant with the ability to search the internet for relevant information. The sky is the limit with Gemini.

What exactly is Gemini? Before that we need to know what a LLM is basically? To put it in a way that's more digestible for the general public, Gemini is a large language model, trained on incomprehensively large scale of data, to generate word by word output with each word predicted using the preceding word which will make sense at the end of the sentence.

Gemini is a large language model developed by Google, that leverages all of Google's access to huge hordes of data for training, to answer any question in a manner that is non-repetitive and fresh with each generation.

How do you manipulate AI to cater your own needs? Well, you need to engineer your prompt in such a way that:
  • It has access to context of the problem you are discussing.
  • Has to believe that it has a fixated role of solving in its aspect. For example, you can assign it to be a supervisor in a problem related to construction and building, and it would churn out answers pertaining to that aspect.
A small note: I have not gone into the nooks and technical know-hows of LLMs and AI; I believe that simplifying this to general terms can be very resourceful to everyone. Furthermore, questions can be asked in the comments section.

So, start by explaining what the problem is beforehand. Typically, you can ask it to assume the role of a specialist in that domain, to narrow down on the problem.

Then, explain what options you are tied to. If you have a coding problem, you can inform what skills you possess, and it would tailor personalised solutions for you.

Here are few examples for using Gemini in a regular work life.

Set reminders and Alarms

If you're someone who takes the hassle of navigating to the Clock app and then keeping reminders for each and everything, then this is it. Set reminders and Alarms with the ease of your command. Just say "OK Google, remind me to watch YouTube today at 9:00 PM".

You can make it remind important tasks, like the one above, or set a reminder for something unimportant like "OK Google, remind me to wake up at 7:00 AM for my interview". That's up to your wish.

I've always set my reminders for these important tasks and Google Assistant makes sure I do them correctly. Very helpful.

Creating preplanners and templates

Gemini is really good with creating boilerplate content for generic tasks, which are meant to be replaced with personalised content by you. For instance, you can ask Gemini to churn out letter templates, holiday schedulers, presentation notes and etcetera.

Gemini can also scrounge on the internet for that one important thing you need to search for hours. Everything is at your fingertips; you just need to realise it!

Message someone through voice

Now, what if I told you that you can text someone through your voice? Cool, right? You can do that using Google's own voice assistant, The Google Assistant. Just ask "Ok Google, Send a message to Arun through WhatsApp".

If there's an application with that name present it will move on to the next step, asking what to send. In this case, "Hey dude, don't forget to rickroll us on your next video."

You can do important and unimportant tasks like this one. The choice is yours. Luckily google assistant supports most of the messaging apps installed. So, there's more compatibility than you probably need.

You can also check for messages with a command: "Ok Google, Check my messages." Google will read out the messages for you and will also tell you from which app the message has been received and who has sent it.

Productivity Planners

Make your hectic life a little organised by using your voice to ask Gemini (Formerly Google Assistant) to create planners based on the context you give.

Add some context, as in what you do, why do you want so, what would you do with it and etcetera, to make a planner that's personalised and tailored to your needs. You can make study planners, work planners or even diet planners!

For example, provide context: "Gemini, I'm a student preparing for exams. Create a study planner for me, including breaks and study sessions for specific subjects." Gemini will generate a customized planner based on your needs.

Pass some time with it

Now, obviously, we know we can do it with Google Assistant. But you can ask it a lot MORE: Pickup lines, Rap songs, Lullabies, Jokes (mostly lame), and some recommended songs.

But what's best is that you can play games with it. It has some popular titles like Akinator and etcetera (Not quite what you'd expect) most of which are by 3rd party developers. However, the doodle games by Google are quite fun.

Be a little extra careful on everything

You can ask the Google Assistant to check the restaurant's authenticity or ask the assistant for the best vacation spots. The good thing is that it gives you all the required information. The bad thing is that it is more or less hit or miss. Sometimes right, most of the times wrong!

So the next time you walk into a restaurant or a hotel, ask the assistant for ratings and authenticity to make sure you trust the right place.
